Yes, as per manufacturer’s installation and operation manual and National codes, all tanks should be inspected and serviced annually. Refer to the maintenance section of your installation manual or enter in to a maintenance and service contract with your installer or heating oil provider.

Depending on the model and the installation date of your Granby Industries tank, your tank maybe warranted from 3 to 30 years.   The warranty on all Granby tanks covers defects in materials and workmanship.

A tank’s life expectancy will vary depending on several factors, the most important factors impacting the life time of an oil tank are quality of installation, regular periodic maintenance, usage and location of the tank, indoors or outdoors.  An oil tank installed indoors is known on average to last longer than an oil tank installed outdoors.

It’s important that homeowners understand that nowadays, there are a few different oil storage solutions available and that all are reliable and offer similar warranties to the homeowners.  All three types have different market prices because of the materials and manufacturing processes in which they are fabricated.  The most affordable oil tanks available on the market are the single wall and double-bottom steel tanks, followed by the polyethylene plastic 2-in-1 tanks and finally the fibreglass tanks. They all have comparable features and benefits; some jurisdictions mandate specific types of oil storage tanks.  Please consult your local oil heat service technician and/or your oil heat provider to get all information about the different oil storage solutions available to you.

Please contact your service technician to confirm the presence of oil or condensation in the double-bottom area. If water from condensation or rain/snow accumulation is present in the visual monitoring tube, water should be removed and the visual monitoring cap should be replaced and the tank can still be used.

If oil presence is confirmed in the monitoring tube, the service technician should proceed to a warranty claim request with his preferred wholesaler. The replacement of the tank under warranty needs to be authorised by Granby Industries before the tank is replaced. In no case should the service technician remove the tank without the prior authorisation of Granby Industries.

You can find that information directly on the label or metal plate on the tank.  In Canada, the thickness of the steel is expressed in millimetres, in the USA the steel thickness is expressed in gauge.

Depending on the year of fabrication, the approval it bears (UL for tanks sold in the USA and ULC for tanks sold in Canada), the type of your oil tank, single wall or double-bottom, the thickness of the steel used for the assembly of your tank can vary due to the different manufacturing codes requirements in effect over the years, that is normal, not all tanks were built to the same code requirements over the years.  There are no right or wrong steel thickness of steel, they are only variances.

Oil tank manufacturers, national codes and authorities having jurisdiction will not allow for used oil tanks to be re-installed.

Residential steel tanks manufactured prior or 2007 are all single bottom type, double-bottom tanks were introduced on the market in 2007.

For tanks manufactured in 2007 and after, you to have to refer to the tank label that will show the model number.

A tank missing its sticker or rating plate no longer has any means to provide information as to when it was manufactured and the specifications of the tank.  If you were not the original owner of the building when the oil tank in question was installed and that you have no document proving the date of installation of the oil tank and the tank shows any signs of aging, the oil tank should be replaced as soon as possible.
